If you want one machine that will run a dozen containers, a couple of VMs and a Plex library without thinking about it, the GMKtec K11 is another great option. It has the strongest multi-core score here that is actually in stock, and it has over a thousand customer reviews behind it — which for Chinese-brand mini PCs matters more than any spec sheet.
If $900 is more than you want to spend, the BOSGAME P6 does about 94% of the multi-core work for 60% of the money, and it is the highest-rated machine in this entire guide at 4.7 stars.

The Ryzen 9 8945HS is an eight-core, sixteen-thread Zen 4 part with a published Geekbench 6 average of 2,032 single-core and 11,544 multi-core (Geekbench Browser). AMD rates it at 45 W default TDP.
What that means in practice: sixteen threads is enough to run Proxmox with several VMs pinned to their own cores and still have headroom for a Plex transcode. The 32GB of DDR5 is the part that actually matters for a homelab — RAM is what you run out of first when you start stacking containers, long before you run out of CPU.
The reason this is my top pick rather than something faster is the review count. Over a thousand ratings at 4.5 stars is a genuinely large sample for this category, and it is the closest thing to a reliability signal you can get without owning fifty units.

The Ryzen 9 6900HX is the previous Zen 3+ generation, and the gap to the 8945HS is smaller than the model numbers suggest: 1,975 single-core and 10,892 multi-core (Geekbench Browser) against the K11’s 2,032 / 11,544. That is roughly a 6% multi-core deficit for $360 less.
At 4.7 stars it is the best-reviewed machine in this guide. The compromise is 24GB of RAM rather than 32GB, and DDR4-class memory rather than DDR5 — which matters much less for a home server than it does for gaming.
This is the one I’d buy if I were starting a homelab today and wasn’t certain how far I’d take it.
ACEMAGIC M5 — most threads per dollar

An honest gap here: the Core i5-14450HX does not have a published Geekbench 6 processor page, so I can’t give you a sourced average the way I can for the AMD parts. What I can tell you from Intel’s own specification is that it is a 10-core, 16-thread Raptor Lake HX part — desktop-class silicon in a laptop package — with a 55 W base power rating.
That HX designation is the interesting bit. These are cut-down desktop dies, so sustained multi-threaded work behaves more like a small tower than a typical mini PC. For $599.99 with 32GB and a 1TB drive, that is a lot of parallel capacity.
The caveat: DDR4 rather than DDR5, and 138 reviews is a much thinner sample than the K11’s thousand. It clears the bar at 4.4, but only just.

Whether that is good value depends entirely on whether you would otherwise buy a 1TB NVMe drive separately. Often you can do better buying the K11 and adding your own storage. I’m listing it because the pre-configured option is genuinely simpler, and because at 4.3 stars across 271 reviews it clears the bar — but it is the lowest-rated machine I’m recommending.
Beelink ME Mini — if what you actually want is a NAS

This is a different kind of machine and it deserves to be judged differently. Six M.2 slots in a chassis the size of a paperback is the whole point — it is a storage box first and a computer second.
The Intel N150 is deliberately modest. A verified Geekbench 6 run on an N150 system recorded 1,261 single-core and 2,899 multi-core (Geekbench Browser result #9485182) — note that is one individual submission rather than a large average, because Geekbench does not publish an aggregate page for this chip. Intel rates the part at a 6 W base power.
Six watts is the number that matters. A file server runs 24/7, and the difference between a 6 W chip and a 45 W one compounds into real money over a year of electricity.
Don’t buy this expecting to transcode 4K video or run VMs. It will disappoint you. Buy it to hold files and serve them reliably.
Beelink Mini S12 — the cheapest sensible starting point

Note the model carefully: this listing is the Mini S12 with an Intel N95. Earlier versions of this guide called it an EQ14, which is a different machine. It isn’t.
Intel does not have a published Geekbench 6 aggregate for the N95 either, so I won’t quote one. What it is: a four-core Alder Lake-N part, no hyper-threading, 15 W. Enough for Pi-hole, Home Assistant, a Docker host with a handful of light containers, or a always-on machine for backups.
At $299 with 316 reviews at 4.4 stars, it is the least risky way to find out whether you actually want a home server before spending $900 on one.
GEEKOM A9 Max — the top end, with a caveat

This is the most expensive machine here and the most capable on paper — 32GB of DDR5 expandable to 128GB, a 2TB drive, and the newest silicon in the guide.
Two honest caveats. First, the Amazon listing describes the processor as a Ryzen AI 9 HX470, and Geekbench does not publish an aggregate benchmark page under that exact designation — so unlike the Ryzen 9 parts above, I cannot give you a sourced score. I am not going to substitute a number from a similarly-named chip.
Second, at 4.2 stars across 146 reviews it is the lowest-rated machine I am willing to list. It clears my floor, but only just, and it is the one I would want you to read the recent reviews on yourself before spending $1,439.
Worth it if you know you need the 128GB memory ceiling. If you don’t, the K11 at $899.98 is the better-evidenced buy.
Choosing between them
Start with RAM, not CPU. Almost everyone who outgrows their first mini PC outgrows it on memory. Every container, every VM, every cache takes RAM long before it saturates eight cores.
Then think about power. A home server runs continuously. The gap between a 6 W N150 and a 45 W Ryzen 9 is not a rounding error at 24/7 — work out your own electricity cost before deciding the faster chip is obviously better.
Then storage topology. If you want drives, count M.2 slots. The ME Mini’s six slots do something none of the others can, regardless of how fast their processors are.
Ignore TOPS marketing. Several of these listings lead with an NPU TOPS figure. For a home server workload — file serving, containers, VMs, media — the NPU sits idle. It is not a reason to pay more.

Is a mini PC actually enough for Proxmox? For a home lab, comfortably. Sixteen threads and 32GB covers several VMs plus containers. The real constraints are RAM ceiling and the number of drives you can attach, not processor speed.
Do I need ECC memory? For a home setup with backups, no. If losing the array would be a genuine problem, you want a platform that supports ECC, and none of these do.
Why no Intel N100 machines? The N100 is a fine chip, but the N150 supersedes it at the same 6 W base power and the N95 covers the budget end.
